RUNWAY EDIT//.

By Laura Steven

Driven, desirous and determined to dazzle, the inspiring team of youngsters behind upcoming fashion show ‘Runway Edit// Fashion for Charity’ promise an exceptional evening in the cultural calendar.

The concept was hatched from the frustration of 21-year-old college student Charlotte Summers, and aims to challenge the lack of creative opportunities available in the area.
Summers said: “I want to show everyone just how much talent Berwick and the North East has, as it always goes unrecognised. I'm determined to change that this year.”
The charity event will be hosted by The Maltings Theatre and Cinema in the Borders town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The show will feature five designers and twenty models, all based in Northumberland and aged between sixteen and twenty-one. The gifted group will flaunt their collections for Spring/Summer ’11 in the three hundred seat venue.

Lillia Henderson, a seventeen-year-old designer, said: “I think it’s a really good chance for young designers around the area to showcase their talent. It will be a great addition to my personal statement when I apply to university and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
Summers herself is multi-talented as a fashion designer, photographer and
dancer.

Her own dance company ‘Meta Strada’, comprised of over forty young performers aged between nine and sixteen, will entertain the audience between trend sets.
Rachel Cumming, a 15-year-old dancer and model, said: “I look forward to working with such a gifted group of dancers, models and designers. It’ll be a lot of hard work and devotion but it will definitely all pay off on the night”.

Summers also said: “It's going to be a very glamorous event. The Maltings are behind me 100% and are looking forward to seeing it all come together. I have always dreamt of organising my own runway show and I can't believe it's actually happening.”
Not only will the event bring rightful recognition to the area, it also bears the added benefit of helping a good cause. ‘Runway Edit’ will be donating all profits to the charity ‘Save the Children’, which fights for the lives of children in 120 countries.

Billie Leigh Hogg, a sixteen-year-old model, said: “As well as helping the talent of Berwick’s creative voice to be heard, we’re helping a good cause too, which makes the effort all the more worthwhile.”

With unemployment at a record high of 20.3% among those aged 16-24, such pro-active enthusiasm is encouraging to see in the new working generation. ‘Runway Edit// Fashion for Charity’ could be a crucial step in establishing more career prospects for budding fashion designers in the North East. Summers is a pioneer for this ultimate goal.
Her own fashion photography was featured in the make-up magazine ‘FaceON’ earlier in 2011. Executive creative director Richard Sumner said: “I’m a
real fan of her work, and Charlotte seems to be a nice girl with a lot of potential.”
‘Runway Edit’ will also see the launch of Summer’s new clothing brand ‘Eat your make-up’, a range of handmade t-shirts and accessories combined with modified vintage apparel.

Tickets to ‘Runway Edit’ cost £5 and are available from The Maltings box office, or by telephone on 01289 330999.
